Laguna Niguel, a very affluent city, is located in the southern part of Orange County, California. The word ″laguna″ is Spanish and translates to mean lagoon and ″Nigueli″ was the name of a Juaneno Indian tribe that lived in the area. The city was built as an unincorporated planned community in 1980 and is located in the San Joaquin Hills, near Laguna Beach. Like most of Southern California, Laguna Niguel has a Mediterranean climate with average year round temperatures in the high sixties to mid seventies. The city is served by the Capistrano Unified School District which includes two high schools, two middle schools, and seven elementary schools. Saint Ann′s Private School is also located in Laguna Niguel.
One of the biggest points of interest located in Laguna Niguel is the Chet Holifield Federal Building, which was originally built for Rockwell International by William Pereira in 1971. The one million square foot building is used today to house the Western Regional Department of Homeland Security and the California Service Center of the United States of America Citizen and Immigration Services. It is also where the 1995 major motion picture Outbreak was filmed. Other points of interest in Laguna Niguel include Badlands Park, Laguna Niguel Regional Park, and Aliso & Wood Canyons Regional Park, as well as, trails, ball fields and the Niguel Botanical Preserve. Among the city′s top employers are Costco, Wal-Mart, Albertson′s and Home Depot, and The County of Orange.
